Political cartoons are a popular form of commentary in American periodicals.
– Author of the book

This book is a compilation of over 100 cartoons about the Chinese, which vividly illustrates American society’s attitude and views towards the Chinese in that period. As early political cartoons were published mainly in newspapers, the layout of the book’s body matter is designed to resemble that of a newspaper. The text is typeset in columns and the paste-up of texts and images invokes the look and feel of American newspapers from that era.

The design of the book jacket is also based on the newspaper layout. The book cover is turned into a ‘front page’, and the title takes the place of the masthead.  As many names of newspapers in the Western World were printed in the Gothic typeface, the title of the book is also printed in a customised Chinese Gothic type. On this ‘Front Page’, a cartoon from the book, entitled ‘President Cleveland rewarded for kowtowing to the Chinese’ is featured. The cartoon satirises the American President for enforcing the treaty between the United States and China while ignoring public opinions that were against it. An imperial Qing court official and the President of the United States were depicted. President Cleveland’s buttock was adorned with a peafowl feather, which was commonly found in Chinese Court Headdress. The characters’ facial expressions and gestures are extremely lively and intriguing.
